How It Works

1. COMPLETE AN APPLICATION

Whether you’ve fallen head over heels for a specific pup or are just curious about becoming a pre-approved pet parent, get ready to unleash the love by filling out our Adoption Application.

🐕‍🦺 APPLY NOW

2. A VOLUNTEER WILL CONTACT YOU

Once you’ve applied, one of our pawsome Buddy’s volunteers will reach out to you. We appreciate your patience, as sometimes we’re chasing our tails with more applications than our volunteers can fetch. It might take a few days before you hear from us, but hang tight – we’re dedicated to making tails wag!

3. REFERENCE CHECK

Next, your volunteer will connect with the personal references you’ve shared in your application. For those who have a furry friend(s), your volunteer will also reach out to your vet to make sure your pup is spayed/neutered and fully up-to-date on shots like rabies, distemper, and parvo. Before the vet call, we ask you to contact your vet to give them permission to chat with us about your pup.

4. PET RESTRICTIONS

If you’re renting or have to play by homeowners’ association rules, we’ll request a copy of the pet rules for your place. If you don’t have this document, no worries! Our volunteer will step in and give your landlord a friendly call to check if there are any animal restrictions in place. We’ve got tails covered!

5. HOME VISIT

Hold onto your leashes, because we’re bringing the pup-approved party to your place!

A Sniff Around: Our volunteer will make sure the living and playing areas, both indoors and outdoors, are dog and/or puppy-safe and hazard-free.

• Dream Dog Wishlist: It’s time to spill the kibble! The volunteer will want to know all about your dream dog – size, breed, age, energy level, and any extra special needs. Do they need to be BFFs with your kitty? Or play nice with your little humans?

• Buddy’s Backstory: Founded in 2013, Buddy’s is a non-profit 501(c)(3) rescue group. Our incredible dogs hail from high-kill shelters in various states and some find their way through local surrenders.

Our transports are then whisked out to their foster homes, where they’re welcomed with open arms and given a 5-day relaxation phase to decompress before meeting potential adopters.

Our foster heroes work their magic within days of transport. Using vet info and their own experiences, they share doggy bios and snapshots. Once bios are up, approved applicants can submit their names. Approved adopters are given an approval card – valid for 1 year.

6. SUBMITTING YOUR NAME FOR A DOG

Ready to dive into connecting with a doggo? Here’s how to make it happen:

• Keep an eye on Buddy’s Facebook, Instagram, or website for the latest doggy details.

• When a pup catches your eye, shoot a text to your volunteer.

• Up to three doggos can have your name on their potential adopter card at once.

• Your volunteer will play matchmaker and check with the foster to confirm their availability and, if all’s well, add your name to the dog’s list.

7. MEETING A DOG

Get ready to meet the four-legged star of your story! Here’s how it happens:

• The dog’s foster will reach out when you’re at the top of the dog’s list or if the pup finds a home.

• When it’s your time to shine, the foster will arrange a meet and greet with the whole family so you can learn more about the pup’s background and story.

• After the meet and greet, the ball’s in your court. You’ll have up to 24 hours to decide if your heart has found its match. If it’s a yes, this is a great time to get your new pup all the gear they’ll need for the pawsome journey ahead!

8. DOG ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

Fees for dogs aged 7 or older is $250, and for those under 7, it’s $450. This non-refundable fee covers all age-appropriate shots and spaying/neutering if necessary. Payment can be accepted via cash or check and is due upon possession of your pup.

Your new buddy will need their own collar, leash and tag with your address and phone number before you can take them home so be sure to buy that ahead of time.
