How It Works
1. COMPLETE AN APPLICATION
When you find a dog you are interested in adopting, or if you would like to be pre-approved without a specific Buddy’s dog in mind, complete our Adoption Application.
2. A VOLUNTEER WILL CONTACT YOU
Following submission, a Buddy’s volunteer will be in contact with you. Please be patient as, at times, we have many more applications than volunteers to process them so it may take a few days before you hear from someone.
3. REFERENCE CHECK
Your volunteer will follow-up with the personal references you provided on the application.
If you have a dog(s), the volunteer will contact your vet to confirm that your dog is spayed/neutered and that your dog is up-to-date on shots/vaccinations for rabies, distemper and parvo. Before the volunteer contacts your vet, he/she will ask you to provide your consent to the vet to disclose information about your dog.
4. PET RESTRICTIONS
If you rent or are subject to homeowners’ association rules, you will be asked to provide a copy of the pet restrictions for your home. If not such document exists, the volunteer will contact your landlord to check on any animal restrictions.
5. HOME VISIT
Your volunteer will set up a home visit with you and all household members. During the visit, the volunteer will inspect the areas where the dog will reside and be active, inside and outside, to ensure there are no hazards for a dog or puppy.
The volunteer will inquire about what you are looking for in a dog: size, breed, age, sex, energy level, and will ask about any specific requirements for the dog such as having to get along with small children or animals already residing in the home.
You will also be informed about Buddy’s Rescue and our adoption process:
- Buddy’s is a 501©3 non-profit rescue group founded in 2013.
- Dogs primarily come from high-kill shelters in other states. Some are local surrenders.
- Transports arrive every 2-3 weeks and the dogs go immediately into their foster homes upon arrival.
- Dogs are subject to a 5 day decompression period, during which the dog does not meet potential.
- Usually within a few days of transport, fosters post pictures/descriptions of the dogs based on the vet information they receive and on their experience with the dogs.
- Once dogs are posted, approved applicants may put their names in for the dogs.
Your volunteer will instruct you on how to submit your name for a dog and how the adoption process works. At the conclusion of the home visit you will be given a Buddy’s Approval Card that is good for one year.
6. SUBMITTING YOUR NAME FOR A DOG
- Frequently review Buddy’s Facebook page, Instagram page and/or Buddy’s website for information on currently available dogs.
- Text your volunteer when interested in a dog.
- Approved applicants may put their name in for up to 3 dogs at a time.
- Your volunteer will check with the foster to see if the dog is still available and, if so, to ask the foster to add your name to the dog’s list, if there is a list.
7. MEETING A DOG
- The dog’s foster will then contact you either when: you are at the top of a dog’s list or if the dog is adopted.
- When top of list, the foster will schedule a meet and greet with you at which all household members must be present.
- At the meet and greet, the dog will be introduced to you and your family. The foster will tell you all he/she knows about the background of the dog and the foster’s experience with the dog.
- The foster will take the dog back to his/her home and you will have up to 24 hours to decide if you would like to adopt the dog. If it’s a yes, this is a great time to get supplies.
8. DOG ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS
- The fee for a dog is $250 if the dog is age 7 or above; $400 if the dog is under 7 years of age. The fee includes all age appropriate shots and having the dog spayed/neutered if still needed. The nonrefundable fee is due in cash or check upon taking possession of the dog
- In order to take possession of the dog, you must have a collar, leash, and tag with your address & phone number on it.
